Reliance Jio 4G services are live. Any user with a 4G VoLTE enabled handset is now eligible for a Jio SIM card. The network claims to provide high-speed Internet at cheaper prices as compared to rivals Reliance Jio 4G SIM is available at all Reliance Digital stores and Digital Xpress Mini. It comes with free unlimited 4G data for the first 90 days as well as access to Jio premium apps. All charges for voice-calls and for roaming have been done away by the company.
Reliance Jio 4G prepaid plans start at Rs 19 for 100MB. Jio 4G postpaid plans start at Rs 149 for 300MB. The data tariff go up till Rs 4,999 for the biggest data pack. The data packs also come with a certain number of free SMSes, which vary from plan to plan. Another way to access Reliance Jio’s 4G network is through a JioFi hotspot device, which is listed for Rs 1,999 on the company’s site. It supports 10 other 2G/3G devices at a time plus one more through USB. The JioFi device packs a 2,300 mAh battery.
However, it isn’t easy to get hold of a Jio SIM or JioFi device either, thanks to massive buzz around the service. Most Reliance stores will greet you with long queues, with people waiting to register their names to get a Jio SIM card. Most likely, you won’t get a Jio 4G SIM card the same day, but consider yourself lucky if you do. But before you walk into a Reliance store to get hold of a Jio SIM card, here are a few things you must know:
Reliance Jio 4G SIM card shortage
In our case, getting a Reliance Jio 4G wasn’t a smooth experience. First up, there was a long queue waiting of people waiting to get up to the counter just to get their names registered. We were told to come almost after two weeks to submit id proof in order to get the SIM. Even when the SIM finally arrives, it takes up to 3 days for it to get activated. Same is true for JioFi device. There is a faster way to get Jio SIM. Users can port their existing phone number to Reliance Jio network, but it is not advised as the service is still in beta phase.
Only VoLTE for calling
Remember, VoLTE is different from normal voice calls. All calls made over VoLTE network consume 4G data. The benefit of 4G over other 2G or 3G is better voice quality. Reliance Industries Limited has gone for a total VoLTE enabled network for calls. A VoLTE-enabled smartphone is a must to use the Jio 4G network. Also, you can’t switch off data in the smartphone if you still want to make calls.
Reliance Jio 4G data tariff
Reliance Jio data plans appear to be cheaper when compared with other networks right now. The prepaid plans start for as low as Rs 19 for 100MB. Plus, there’s free WiFi data and SMSes for most of these plans. Also, company’s suit of Jio apps are being touted for streaming music and content online. The Jio app services are free as well. There are 10 prepaid data plans starting from XXS and going all the way up to XXXL at Rs 4,999.
Reliance Jio 4G postpaid plans start at Rs 149 for 300MB of data. A few data packs with higher value also offer free ISD minutes. The postpaid plans offer 4GB, 10GB, 20GB, 35GB, 60GB and 75GB data packs. These are priced ranging Rs 4,99 to Rs 4,999 and come with a validity of billing cycle.
Free WiFi data
Reliance Jio prepaid 4G plans offer free WiFi data additionally. This data can be used on the Jio WiFi internet hotspots, in case a user runs out of data on their pack. But here’s the catch: The free Wifi data can only be accessed via Reliance Jio WiFi public hotspots and from the JioNet app. So, having the JioNet app on your smartphone is compulsory if you plan to use the free WiFi data. The JioNet app can be downloaded from Google Play Store or App Store on iOS.
Reliance Jio broadband with 1Gbps
Reports indicate Reliance Jio has started testing on home broadband services based on fibre to the home (FTTH) wired network service. RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani, at company’s annual shareholder’s meeting, gave a brief update on upcoming Reliance Jio GigaFiber service. Reliance Jio’s fibre broadband service will reportedly offer speeds of up to 1Gbps, and the service is expected to roll out later this year. Ambani already targets 100 million wireless broadband customers.
